“Jaws”

Jaws is about an unusually huge shark attacking people on the coast of a small tourist town and it takes forever to catch the shark because the mayor underestimates the shark and only wants to make money off of the tourists at any cost. This movie was such a classic masterpiece that had the potential to be a disaster. Actually, it kind of was a disaster, but it all worked out. I was surprised to find out that the shark was originally going to be shown in earlier parts of the movie. If the shark would have never broke and Spielberg decided to show it earlier in the movie it definitely would not be such a huge success. I feel like hiding the shark pulled your attention more and more because you were anticipating its arrival. The sound in this film was absolutely perfect, especially the non-diegetic sound. The “dun dun… dun dun” sound when the shark is approaching builds tension and makes the whole movie suspenseful. The sound and the hiding of the shark until the end is what really made this film a masterpiece that holds your attention until the end. The concept of fear and terror over something that can actually happen in real life is already interesting but the elements Spielberg added really made this movie captivating. Even though the actually production of this film was a mess and a lot of things went wrong, Spielberg handled it very well and because of that, “Jaws” became a blockbuster.
